“She was one of the most senior singers and had a unique style of singing. Singer Bappi Lahiri said Begum’s death was a huge loss to the industry, which is celebrating its 100 years in May. Reacting to her death, megastar Amitabh Bachchan tweeted: “The golden voice of Shamshad Begum, playback singer of great eminence in some of the most historic film songs… now silent…RIP.” While Shamshad Begum sang for Nutan,Lata Mangeskar sang for Madhubala. The two sang for the last time in 1960 in Mughal – E – Azam‘s song Teri Mehfil Mein Qismat. Their other duets comprise, Pyar Ke Jahan Ki from 1949 film Patanga and Bachpan Ke Din 1951’s Deedar, said she was saddened to hear about her death. The two brilliant voices first came together in Darna mohabbat karle in Andaz (1949). I felt very sad as I sang with her in many films. She tweeted: “Aaj subha mujhe pata chala ki mashhoor playback singer shamshad begumji humare beech nahi rahi,ye sunke mujhe bohot dukh hua, maine unke saath kafi filmo mein gaane gaaye,wo bohot acchhi hasmukh aur sidhi saadhi shakhsiyat thi, main unko shraddhanjali arpit karti hun.” Lata Mangeshkar and Mukesh were the rising stars of playback singing at that point of time.In their first song together Lata Mangeshkar was a part of the chorus while Shamshad Begum was the main singer! LATA MANGESHKAR AND SHAMSHAD BEGUM MOVIE
Andaz is the only movie that stars Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor together. The film starred Dilip Kumar, Nargis and Raj Kapoor in a love triangle. Lata Mangeshkar – Yad Rakhna Chand Taro (Anokha Pyar 1949) : Īndaz (Hindi: अन्दाज़) was a 1949 Hindi film, directed by Mehboob Khan and music by Naushad. Suraiya – Aise Mein Agar Tum Aa Jate (Balam 1949) : Noor Jehan – Shala Jawaniyan Mane (Gulbakawali 1939) : Īshok Kumar & Devika Rani – Mere Jeevan Ke Path (Anjaan 1941) : While playback singing was seen by some at the time as unauthentic, others sensed in it the possibility for greater creativity and entertainment. Particularly unnerving was the use of one singer’s voice for many different actors. When playback singing first became common, the sudden disjuncture between the voice of the singer and the body of the actor was a source of ‘discomfort’ for audiences. Part of the audience’s enjoyment of early sound films came from their knowledge that the actor on the screen was actually singing the songs they heard. However in the 1940s playback singers began to be increasingly used. In the early days of Indian film industry, actors mostly recorded the songs they were shown singing on the screen. Lata Mangeshkar – Chanda Gaye Pardes (Chakori 1949) : Suraiya – Ek Bewafa Ki Yaad Ne (Char Din 1949) : Zohrabai Ambalawali – Mohe Banka Balam Lage Pyara (Bela 1947) : Manju – Do Dilon Ko Yeh Duniya (Chand 1944) : And there are many such monuments along an endless musical shoreline built by a legion of architects, engineers and craftsmen who valiantly worked with their age old tools creating priceless works of art each unique in shape, form and style to create a rich heritage of that golden era of the music. The old hindi film song stands like a monument on the shore weathered by the winds of time and the gentle caresses of the waves, to be admired across generations. Lata Mangeshkar & Chitalkar – O Gori O Chhori : Shamshad Begum & Chitalkar – Maar Gayo Re : Shamshad Begum & Mohd Rafi – Do Char Din Pyar Se : Lalita Dewoolkar & Chitalkar – Najariya Mein Aayi Ho : Lalita Dewoolkar & Mohd Rafi – More Raja Ho : Lalita Dewoolkar & Chitalkar – Katwa Ke Naiyya : They both had a strong Bhojpuri storyline, rustic Bhojpuri dialogues and great songs. Both films, however, had one thing in common. The film must not be confused with Rajshri Production’s 1982 film of the same name, starring Sachin and Sadhna Singh. Music was directed by C Ramchandra (who preferred the name Chitalkar when he sang). The film starred Dilip Kumar, Kamini Kaushal, S L Puri, Maya Bannerjee, David, Tiwari and Ranibala. Nadiya Ke Paar ( Hindi: नदिया के पार) is a 1949 ( or is it 1948?) Hindi film produced by Filmistan Studios and directed by Kishore Sahu ( remember him? he played Dev Anand’s father in the 1972 film Hare Rama Hare Krishna).
